My Idea

Using AR along with smarter planet would really make my idea stand and hopefully give a better background and reasoning to what I am choosing to do. I liked the idea of using augmented reality to replace paper, something frequently used and wasted by people every day.

I wanted to create something that could potentially replace noticeboards and information boards. Replacing the methods currently used with paper, to free up wall space and also to reduce waste and chances of vandalism and accidental damage.

I took a walk around the University and had a look at the SU shop, outside, the glass windows were full of leaflets and notices put up by students and staff to either advertise certain vacancies of work or to make readers aware of spare rooms in houses or items that they have for sale. This type of thing is really only viewed by those with specific needs. For example, the SU shop would be great to go to look for items for sale being sold by previous students or those who need the extra cash. People know to go to certain places for certain information and it is these places that I want to target my project at.

I want to create markers on walls of buildings around the university, markers that when opened with AR software are seen on smartphones by anyone who chooses to view them and shows information about certain degrees at University. Not only will this help non-students within plymouth who use the University as a pass-through, but it will also help current students identify and buildings and will be able to show them a little insight as to what goes on within specific buildings.

Using stereotypes helps me to show more interesting degrees that fall under certain categories at University. For example, doing an arts degree is stereotyped as 'colouring in' for some people! I wanted to steer people clear of this stereotype and promote degrees some students may not have known existed.

Augmented Reality

There are a few AR ideas out there at the moment that I quite like, a few apps which link with location, so people are able to navigate there way around cities with certain apps that allow them to locate restaurants, coffee shops etc.

I also liked the idea that it showed extra information aside of what you can see with the tangible product. This was the Idea I wanted to carry forward with my idea. Mixing reality with virtual reality to show more information/ ideas. The only difference is that as I plan to incorporate aspects of smarter planet in with it, so although it looks fun, I want to create something that ultimately has more of a purpose and depth.

Playing around with ideas.

After thinking about what to use in my final project and how best to link it to my dissertation, I thought it would be better to start with parts of my dissertation that I could have researched independently. Parts that really interested me that I feel I could have written a dissertation on.

The topic I have decided to choose is stereotypes in advertising. I found that while researching, many adverts through television or even magazines etc have been banned by regulation companies for using stereotypes too strongly. This led me to believe that stereotypes were always seen in a negative way, or was it the way in which the stereotype is portrayed, that affects how it is perceived?

I wanted to explore it in more depth so I am setting out to create and develop an image which I will eventually turn into a survey so my research has more depth.

After the image has been created I hope to create similar versions so I have a few to use in the final project.

Intro Lecture

Key words for this module and the 2 terms ahead;

  • Significant
  • Creative
  • Cultural
  • Industrial
  • Critical
  • Theoretical
  • Interactive
  • Business Orientated
The main themes this lecture spoke about was how important it was for us to link our final project to our dissertation. We were shown loads of past work which helped to inspire me to come up with a few new ideas or even just developments on the idea I already have, to help it evolve int something bigger and better.

There is the potential of two different degrees for this course, an arts degree and a sciences degree;

BA: More artistic and socially orientated
Bsc:  More industrial/ technological
